To the south of Grand Canyon National Park on the lands of the newly established Baaj Nwaavjo I'tah Kukveni Grand Canyon Monument, near the sacred Red Butte is Pinyon Plain/Grand Canyon Mine. Though future uranium contracts are prohibited within the monument, existing claims are grandfathered in. Energy Fuels from Canada who owns 'Canyon Mine' reportedly began extracting ore last month. The company intends to transport ore from the mine, through the city of Flagstaff and Navajo Nation to another one of their operations, The White Mesa Mill in southeast Utah.

In effect, the operation will transport radioactive ore from the traditional lands of the Havasupai (whose water systems are threatened by the mine), through Navajo Nation (who were left with 500-1,000 abandoned uranium mines on their lands from the Cold War), up to the lands of the Ute Mountain Ute nation whose waters are threatened by the only operating uranium mill in the country, The White Mesa Mill. The contamination of lands occupied by the Indigenous nations of the Colorado Plateau must be recognized for what it is: a continuation of the genocidal philosophies of Manifest Destiny.
